The Eastern Section of the Lycian Way follows ancient coastal and mountain paths that connect some of Lycia’s most significant cities, sanctuaries, and natural landmarks. This part of the trail is defined by a gradual eastward journey from broad coastal plains into forested mountains, combining Mediterranean landscapes with deep historical layers.
Designed as a well-paced, guided hiking experience, this tour balances daily walks with archaeological sites, coastal towns, and scenic inland routes. Rather than attempting long-distance trekking, the program focuses on key sections of the Lycian Way, allowing travelers to experience the trail’s character while maintaining comfort and continuity.
Along the route, hikers walk beside Roman aqueducts, descend into ancient harbor cities, pass through mountain villages, and reach sites where mythology, early Christianity, and nature intersect. The journey concludes near Antalya, reflecting the natural eastward flow of the Lycian Way from isolated paths toward major ancient and modern gateways.
This tour is ideal for active travelers who want to experience the Lycian Way in depth, without carrying heavy packs or following extreme daily distances, while still engaging meaningfully with the region’s landscapes and history.
Arrival in Türkiye. If arriving internationally via Istanbul, a domestic connecting flight to Dalaman Airport (DLM) is required. Upon arrival in Dalaman, meet and greet at the airport followed by a transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest after travel and prepare for the hiking program ahead. Overnight in the Dalaman / Fethiye region or Kaş (depending on flight logistics).
Begin hiking on the Eastern section of the Lycian Way with the Delikkemer–Patara route, following an ancient aqueduct that once supplied water to Patara. This gently descending path provides a comfortable introduction to the trail. Arrive at Patara Ancient City, former capital of the Lycian League and one of the most important political and maritime centers of ancient Lycia. After the visit, transfer to Kaş.
Overnight in Kaş.
Transfer to the trailhead near Apollonia, a small Lycian settlement that supported the coastal trade network. Hike toward Aperlai, an ancient harbor city known for maritime commerce and purple-dye production. After the hike, enjoy a boat tour to Simena (Kaleköy), where partially submerged ruins reveal the impact of ancient earthquakes and a small Byzantine castle overlooks the Kekova coast. Return to Kaş.
Overnight in Kaş.
Drive eastward to Myra, one of Lycia’s most influential cities, famous for its monumental rock-cut tombs and Roman theatre. Myra is also closely associated with St. Nicholas, bishop of the city in the 4th century. Continue to the Gelidonya Lighthouse trailhead and walk to the lighthouse and back along the same route, enjoying sweeping views of the Mediterranean—one of the most iconic viewpoints on the Eastern Lycian Way. Transfer to Çıralı afterward.
Overnight in Çıralı.
Visit Olympos, an ancient city set in a lush river valley where ruins, forest, and coastline intersect. In antiquity, Olympos was an important port before coming under Roman control after a period associated with piracy. After lunch in Ulupınar, hike toward Yanartaş (Chimaera), where natural gas flames have burned continuously since antiquity. Known to ancient sailors and linked to Lycian mythology, the site remains one of the most distinctive natural landmarks on the Lycian Way.
Overnight in Çıralı.
Today’s hike moves into the mountainous interior of the Eastern Lycian Way, offering a change from coastal scenery to forested slopes and higher elevations. The trail ascends from the Adrasan region toward Mount Musa (Musa Dağı), passing through pine forests, rocky paths, and open clearings with wide views over the Mediterranean coastline. This section reflects the inland character of the Lycian Way, where ancient routes connected coastal cities with upland settlements. The hike is moderate in difficulty, with gradual ascents and varied terrain, providing one of the most scenic and rewarding walking days of the program. After the hike, return to Çıralı by vehicle. Overnight in Çıralı.
Transfer to Antalya Airport for onward or return flights, concluding the Eastern Lycian Way hiking experience.
